20 Million Awarded to State Projects; 2 Million Given to Terrebonne

WASHINGTON – United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded Louisiana grants totaling $19,781,323 for transportation systems improvements. Communities from Houma to Lake Charles will receive awards to complete projects to strengthen local infrastructure and create and sustain construction jobs. Of the six grants released today, four are funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

“Through the Recovery Act, the federal government has made much-needed investments in brick-and-mortar projects that upgrade our nation’s aging infrastructure. Louisiana communities are now reaping the benefits,” Sen. Landrieu said. “These Department of Transportation grants will fund necessary projects to keep our local transportation systems running safely and efficiently. The result will strengthen local commerce and improve the infrastructure that is vital to our day-to-day business activities in Louisiana.”

Sen. Landrieu was a member of a bipartisan group of nearly 20 Democratic and Republican Senators that constructed a compromise bill to the original American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The final legislation appropriated billions of dollars for Louisiana projects and programs, including four of the following grants:

· $9,223,840 to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Baton Rouge to purchase vans, security equipment and to conduct preventative maintenance. This grant was funded by the ARRA.

· $5,039,112 to the City of New Orleans and New Orleans Aviation Board for apron rehabilitation at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International airport.

· $2,063,566 to the City of Lake Charles for the renovation of a maintenance facility to create a transit terminal and customer service center. This grant was funded by the ARRA.

· $2,052,316 to Houma Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government to purchase buses for expansion purposes, as well as communications equipment, shop equipment, automated data processing hardware and mobile fare collection equipment. This grant was funded by the ARRA.

· $1,181,220 to St. Tammany Parish Government for the construction of the Abita Park & Ride and preventive maintenance. This grant was funded by the ARRA.

· $221,269 to the Jefferson Davis Airport Commission District Number 1 for runway rehabilitation at Jefferson Davis Airport in Jennings, La.
