NSU - If the budget bill (HB1) currently moving through the Louisiana Legislature is not amended, Nicholls State University is slated to lose $7.7 million in state appropriations. This will bring Nicholls’ total state funding reductions since fiscal year 2008-2009, to $19.9 million. That would be a 56-percent reduction in state appropriation. As the current budget proposal stands, total reductions in state general fund support for all of higher education since FY 2008-2009 would reach $585 million.

Detectives have responded to three burglaries in a span of 24 hours. The suspects broke into the American Legion Hall, Knights of Columbus Hall and the St. Philomena Church Thrift Store.

DEQ - Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared May as Air Quality Awareness Month in Louisiana. May is traditionally the start of ozone season and the proclamation was made to encourage citizens to become familiar with the Air Quality Index, to understand what causes ozone formation and to take voluntary steps to help prevent the formation and improve air quality.

DEQ - In May, the Enviroschool Program of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is offering free workshops on Permits 101: Understanding the Basics. This workshop will give participants an understanding of what permits are, the different types of permits and the permitting process within each media – air, water and waste.

APSO - Last night around 9:25 p.m., a caller/resident from the 200 block of Daggs Street in Belle Rose advised of a fight on the street and while she was on the phone with the Dispatcher she overheard shots fired. The caller then advised one male subject was shot. While deputies were responding to the scene, the victim (18 yoa male who resides on Daggs Street) was being transported by a resident in his personal vehicle to Assumption Community Hospital. He was stabilized with one wound to the chest area and later flown by Acadian Ambulance Air Med to a Baton Rouge area hospital for further treatment.

DEQ - The American Lung Association’s State of the Air report was released today and demonstrates the improvement in air quality throughout Louisiana. Several cities were listed as cleanest in the nation for particle pollution, known as PM 2.5, with Monroe-Bastrop listed as one of the top seven cleanest cities in the nation for PM 2.5 and ozone combined.
